Victoria Theatre: The first purpose-built professional theatre in the round in England which opened in Stoke-on-Trent on 9 October 1962; as opposed to the first professional theatre in the round company which was founded at Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough, in 1955. The Victoria Theatre was designed and founded by Stephen Joseph, its first Artistic Director. Alan Ayckbourn moved from Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough, to become a director, playwright and actor when the Victoria Theatre opened. The company later moved to the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle-under-Lyme, in 1986 as the first purpose-built theatre in the round in Europe and still has close ties to the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough.
