Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round (1976 - 1995)

The Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round (originally Theatre in the Round at Westwood from 1976 - 1977) was the second home of theatre in the round in Scarborough and ran from 1976 to 1995. Throughout this entire period, it was run by Alan Ayckbourn, who made the company an internationally renowned home for new writing.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round opened on 26 October 1976 as an all-year round venue with two performance spaces - the theatre in the round ands the studio. It was initially intended to only be a temporary home for the company but, over two decades, It became - by many accounts including Alan Ayckbourn - the most loved of all the homes of the company.

The company would stay in 'Westwood' for twenty years before the company moved to its first purpose-sebuilt home in 1996.

These pages tell the stories behind the company, the venue, the plays and the people at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round.
